Spelling

Written Spelling – Each contestant will be given a multiple choice test of one hundred words.

  • Contestants will select the correctly or incorrectly spelled word from the four choices given.
  • The top ten winners will participate in an oral spell-off that will have its own set of winners.
  • Two spelling lists are provided on the following pages. Contestants will be tested over list one on odd-numbered years and list two on even-numbered years.
  • Words must be spelled as they are printed in the following lists.

Oral Spelling – Contestants may not enter this event but must qualify for this event by placing 1st-10th in the Written Spelling Competition.

  • The order in which the contestants placed on the written test will not be a factor in the order of the oral test. Contestants will pick a number to determine the order in which they will be called upon to spell a word.
  • Words for this competition will be on the collegiate level and are not included in the list below.
  • Contestants should state the word, spell the word, then state the word again, which will signify to the moderator that the contestant has finished spelling the word.
  • Once the word has been restated, the spelling of the word is final; the contestant will not be able to respell or change the spelling of the word.
  • Contestants will take turns spelling until places 1st-5th places have been awarded. Students must spell at least one word correctly in order to place.
  • Each contestant will be given a word and must spell the word correctly in order to move onto the next round. If multiple students are eliminated in one round and there are not five remaining contestants, the contestants who spelled their words incorrectly will compete for fifth place, and so on.
  • When only two contestants remain, if a contestant misspells their word, the other contestant must then spell a word correctly to be awarded first place. The competition must end with a correctly spelled word.
